Shimano takes another logical step in the evolution of gravel components. With the introduction of the GRX RX717 line expands the brand's gravel-specific Di2 family with a more affordable 1×12-speed configuration, without compromising on reliability or performance. This makes wireless electronic shifting accessible to a much larger group of gravel riders.
Whereas Di2 was long reserved for high-end builds, Shimano is now explicitly opting to broaden the range. The RX717 series aligns with the philosophy United in Gravel: performance for everyone, regardless of budget or driving style.

Fully wireless Di2, but simpler
At the heart of the RX717 group is the fully wireless Di2 platform, identical to what we know from DURA-ACE, ULTEGRA and the latest MTB groupsets. The setup is aimed at 1×12-speed, focusing on simplicity, reach and reliability.
The group consists of:
- a ST-RX715-R Di2 Dual Control lever (right, shifting + braking),
- two options for a left-hand brake lever without gearshift function,
- and the RD-RX717 wireless rear derailleur.
Combined with a 10-51T cassette offers the group a range that effortlessly suits steep gravel climbs, long bikepacking days and technical terrain.

Well-known MTB technique in a gravel jacket
The RX717 rear derailleur is clearly inspired by Shimano's MTB-Di2 lines. Think:
- SHADOW ES technology for maximum chain stability,
- a low-profile design With skid plate,
- and Automatic impact recovery, with which the derailleur automatically repositions itself after an impact.
The battery is safely hidden in the derailleur and is interchangeable with those of, among others GRX RX827, XTR and DEORE XT Di2. Shimano gives a range of 700 to 1,000 km, depending on usage and conditions.
Tailor-made cockpit: clever combination
A major plus point of RX717 is its flexibility. The ST-RX715-R acts as the only switching unit, while on the left a brake lever without electronics is chosen:
- the GRX-branded BL-RS717, visually matching GRX builds;
- Whether the Shimano-branded BL-RS717-LS, intended as a low-cost option for riders already riding 105, Ultegra or Dura-Ace Di2.
Through the E-TUBE app Di2 buttons are fully customisable: shifting logic, speed and firmware updates are easily adjusted.

Positioning: logical and strategic
With RX717, Shimano closes the gap between mechanical GRX and the more expensive Di2 variants. The result is a group that:
- is simpler than 2×-setup,
- technically mature feel,
- and is attractive to both new gravel riders and upgraders.
Conclusion: RX717 is not a slimmed-down Di2, but a smart repositioning. Just what the gravel market needs.
