The Canyon Exceed was the ultralight hardtail for World Cup cross-country for years. Now the model has grown into a whole family. The most striking new model is the Exceed CFR Gravel: the carbon mountain bike frame of the Exceed, but with a racing handlebar.

Why a mountain bike with a dropbar?

With ultra-adventurous races like the Atlas Mountain Race, the Tour Divide and the Silk Road Mountain Race, more and more riders are building their own drop bars on their mountain bikes. They want the grip, strength, tire clearance and gears of a mountain bike, with the handling of a racing handlebar. Canyon now offers this ready-made solution.

Built to be repaired on the go

Anyone who rides without assistance has nothing to do with a broken cable. That's why the Exceed CFR Gravel works wirelessly with SRAM Rival AXS: no cables that fray or get pinched under luggage bags. Furthermore: a Fox 32 SC Performance fork with 60 mm travel length, Canyon GR 30 wheels, Maxxis Aspen 2.4 tires, the VCLS 2.0 carbon seatpost and the CP0039 Double Drop handlebar with Gear Groove for computer, lights or a stem. Weight: 10.2 kilograms, the frame weighs 1,250 grams.

And for marathons: the Exceed CFR

The same frame also features an updated, classic design. Exceed CFR With a flat handlebar for marathons and stage races: RockShox SID SL Ultimate fork (100 mm), SRAM XX SL AXS and DT Swiss XRC1200 carbon wheels. The weight is 9.6 kg. Both models are only available online at Canyon.

Our perspective

Clever of Canyon: this is exactly what ultra riders have been tinkering with for years themselves. With a suspension fork and 2.4 tires, this is more of a mountain bike than a gravel bike, so for the average Dutch gravel rider it’s too much. For those who dream of bikepacking in the mountains, it’s a very serious option.
