New Garmin Tacx Alpine vs Wahoo KICKR Climb: Who will win the battle for the ultimate incline simulator?

Indoor training will get a major upgrade in 2025 with the introduction of the Tacx Alpine, Garmin's answer to the long-available Wahoo KICKR Climb. Both systems are designed to mimic inclines by physically moving the front of your bike up or down. But which offers the best climbing experience - and is it worth the investment?

Tacx Alpine: more than a slope simulator

Garmin unpacks with quite a bit of innovation. The Tacx Alpine works seamlessly with the NEO 2T and 3M smarttrainers and offers:

  • Simulation of slopes up to 25% and descents up to -10%.
  • Real-time steering by a dynamic fork mount that picks up your steering movements - perfect for apps like Zwift or Tacx Training™.
  • A motion base which adds forward-backward movement, for an extra natural climb/descent experience.
  • Quiet, stable build - also suitable for fanatical sprints or seated tempo climbs.

The Tacx Alpine costs €1.099,99, works exclusively with Garmin's own platform as well as offering linkage to Garmin Connect for comprehensive data analysis.

Wahoo KICKR Climb: the pioneer

The Wahoo KICKR Climb came to market back in 2018 and has been a fixture on the indoor training circuit ever since. What you get:

  • Simulation of slopes up to 20% and descents up to -10%.
  • Seamless integration with KICKR ecosystem (KICKR, Core, Snap).
  • No steering detection or motion base - pure up-and-down movement.
  • Automatically controlled by apps such as Zwift, RGT, Rouvy.

With a price tag around €599-€699, the KICKR Climb is more affordable as well as compatible with a wider range of platforms.

Who is what for?

  • Tacx Alpine is ideal for the Garmin fan who already invested in a NEO 2T/3M and is looking for maximum immersion. The combination of incline simulation, handlebar capability and motion base literally and figuratively takes your training to the next level.
  • KICKR Climb remains a solid option for those who ride Zwift, have a smaller budget and don't need extra features. Its reliability and broad app support make it a safe choice for many indoor riders.

Our conclusion

The Tacx Alpine is technologically superior, but comes with a hefty price tag and is only attractive if you are already in the Tacx/Garmin ecosystem. The KICKR Climb is cheaper, widely deployable and does what it needs to do - but lacks the 'next-gen' feel that Garmin offers.

🔧 Are you looking for the most realistic indoor climbing experience, with all the trimmings? Then the Tacx Alpine is your new partner. Looking mainly for reliable functionality without overkill? KICKR Climb remains a rock-solid option.

Both systems are now available through your local bike specialist or online. Let your choice depend on your current setup, your budget as well as your training goals.
