Van Rysel launches first carbon wheel sets: VR 35 and VR 50 - top quality at a competitive price?

After more than two years of development, From Rysel, Decathlon's high-performance cycling brand, the carbon wheel set market with the VR 35 and VR 50. Designed for both road and gravel riders, the wheel sets promise a combination of low rolling resistance, aerodynamics and versatility. But how do they compare to the competition when it comes to price and performance?

Versatile design for different surfaces

Both wheel sets share the same basic construction with a Internal rim width of 22 mm and external width of 30 mm. This makes them compatible with tyres from 25 mm to 55 mm, making them an interesting choice for both road and gravel riders. The hooked tubeless-ready rims offer the flexibility to choose between a Traditional inner tube setup or tubeless setup for less rolling resistance and a smoother ride.

What is immediately noticeable is that Van Rysel does not specifically pigeonhole the wheels - a smart move. With the wide rim and tubeless option, you can use them on fast asphalt roads, rougher gravel routes or even light off-road terrain.

Performance: climbing or aerodynamics?

Van Rysel is introducing two models that cater to different rider needs:

  • VR 35: With a rim height of 35 mm this wheelset focuses on lightweight performance and climbing. The total weight of the set is 1,490 grams (670g for the front wheel, 820g for the rear wheel). This makes it an attractive option for riders who like to do a lot of altimeters.
  • VR 50: This model, with a 50 mm high rim, is optimised for aerodynamic efficiency. Van Rysel claims a 16% improvement in aerodynamics compared to the VR 35, meaning this model is better suited for flat roads, fast rides and time trials. Weight remains relatively low with 1,560 grams per set (710g front wheel, 850g rear wheel).

In terms of performance, Van Rysel seems to offer a balanced choice between weight and aerodynamics. With a carbon clincher design, tubeless capabilities and modern internal widths, these wheels are in line with the latest trends in wheel technology.

Price-quality: how do they compare with the competition?

With a price of €799.99 for the VR 35 and €899.99 for the VR 50 Van Rysel positions these wheel sets at the lower end of the premium segment. Compared to big brands like Zipp, Enve or Roval, these wheel sets are significantly cheaper, while on paper they offer similar specifications.

The big question, of course, is: how do these specs translate to the road? Van Rysel still lacks the long history and racing heritage that other brands do, but if their carbon frames and aero helmets are any indication, these wheels could perform surprisingly well.

A comparable wheelset from a premium brand will soon cost 1.500 to2,000, while Van Rysel is almost half the price. For riders who want good aerodynamic performance and low weight without raiding their bank account, this seems like a smart choice.

Conclusion: an interesting option for price-conscious riders

Van Rysel put with the VR 35 and VR 50 a strong first step into the world of carbon wheelsets. Their versatility, low weight and modern tubeless-ready construction make them attractive for both climbers as speed seekers.

Advantages:
✅ Sharp price for a carbon wheelset
✅ Versatile: road, gravel, climbing
✅ Modern widths and tubeless compatibility
✅ Lightweight for this price range

Disadvantages:
❌ No proven reputation in the wheel segment yet
❌ Competition from established brands with more racing experience

Whether these wheel sets are going to shake up the market will depend on how they perform in practice. But for riders who seek an upgrade without paying the top price, Van Rysel looks set to become a serious challenger.
