For some time there were rumours about the new flagship group from US-based SRAM. The new SRAM RED AXS is here! As with previous launches, many dealers were sent a box containing a lock with a code, which could only be opened at launch. Of course, sneak peaks were available before the embargo date, but most were able to hold back until the 'moment supreme'. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's new<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the main areas of improvement is weight. Of course, it depends on exactly which configuration you choose, but the group weighs in at just under 2,500 grams. Thereby, it's actually not an entirely new design, but more of a 'refresh'. The shifters have become slightly smaller (which also allows you to save weight. In the battle for grams, this top SRAM group wins over its Shimano counterpart by just under 10 grams. Big up to them. We already got some nice pictures via Specialized, as they immediately launched their new flagship bikes with SRAM RED AXS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shifters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most important are the shifters. Whether they are also aerodynamically better is of course questionable, but at least it looks tighter. You can brake a lot more directly with a lot less force in your hands. Because of the new design, the brake levers are also mounted slightly differently on your handlebars. Saves a few degrees, but good to remember if you go for this top-of-the-range group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still 12 speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Where many had thought SRAM would also switch to 13-speed with this group comes home to a cold shower. The group is still 'just' 12-speed. But with the weight savings and the more direct braking, combined with a more direct shifting system (a narrower cage at the front derailleur), you're going to enjoy heir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does that cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prices and shifting systems, that's always a thing. What we know is that the SRAM RED AXS cassettes are not cheap. A sloppy \u20ac525 for a cassette can almost be called bizarre. You can buy the complete group from big-box retailer Futurum for \u20ac3350. But you do get the new Hammerhead with it. That's an advantage. But still. \u20ac3k for just a group is really for a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
