Garmin expands the Tacx line with the Tacx Nēra, The Smart Trainer that moves with you. The trainer moves forward, backward and sideways, measures power and cadence to within 1% second accuracy, simulates slopes up to 20% and can run sprints at up to 2,200 watts. You have the choice between a version with pre-assembled cassette or a Zwift Ready version with Zwift Cog & Click. Both cost €999.99.

Movement for long drives

The built-in motion sensors allow the bike to move in three directions. According to Garmin, this makes driving more realistic and more comfortable, which is especially important during long sessions in the winter.

Cassette of Zwift Cog & Click

With the pre-assembled cassette, the trainer is ready to go as soon as it comes out of the box. The Zwift Ready version includes a Zwift Cog & Click: one gear with virtual shifting, silent and without adjustment, in Zwift and ROUVY (an active subscription is required for this). Those who purchase the Zwift Ready version and are not yet a member of Zwift will receive an offer for a free membership.

Made to race

In race mode, the trainer reacts even faster, so you can respond faster to a start-up in selected apps. The built-in Wi-Fi should ensure a stable connection during virtual races in Zwift or ROUVY.

Training with Tacx and Garmin

You set up the trainer via the Tacx Training app, with a library of free workouts. When you purchase it, you get 45 days of premium access, which also allows you to ride real routes from around the world. In Garmin Connect, you can create a free Garmin Coach training plan that you then follow in the Tacx Training app. With an Edge bike computer or Garmin watch, you can see indoor and outdoor rides along with your recovery data. And for those who want more: with the Tacx Alpine (gradients up to 25%, descents up to -10%), the front of the bike also goes up and down.

Our perspective

Until now, movement has mainly been found in more expensive trainers. With the Nēra, Garmin brings it under the thousand-euro mark, which makes it interesting for anyone who rides indoors every winter. What we want to know: how quiet is it, how natural does the movement feel during a sprint, and how well does the virtual switching work outside of Zwift? As soon as we can test it, you’ll read about it here.
