Canyon had the opportunity to present its products at the Tech Week in San Francisco. Canyon Predict Presented, a concept racing bike full of sensors. The idea: the bike sees danger approaching before you do.

How does it work?

The frame contains micro-radars, cameras, and an AI chip that processes everything in real time (Edge AI). Together, they look around you in 360 degrees. They recognize other traffic, track what’s happening in a group, advise on your speed in curves, and spot approaching dangerous intersections. Through V2X technology, the bike can also communicate with cars and the environment in the future. The information is displayed on a screen in the handlebar, or in the view of Canyon’s smart Stingr-helmet.

Canyon points out the more than 1,100 cyclists who die on American roads every year. The Predict is therefore primarily a study into how technology can make cyclists safer. It is (still) not a product that you can buy.

Our perspective

It’s a concept bike, so for now it’s just a glimpse into the future. Rear view radar (think Garmin Varia) is already common; looking ahead and warning of curves or bad road conditions is a big step forward. Whether riders in a group want to have their eyes on a visor screen remains to be seen.
